Quite recent PSU has no 8pin 12v ATX Power, Safe?

Hi there I just bought a new motherboard to fit my i5 2500k socket aswell as upgrade to USB3 and able to handle 1600Mhz RAM. I was advised to buy the ASUS P8 Z77-V LX I have a fairly recent PSU, its a Corsair 850W Dual Heat Pipe. I am unable to find the 8pin ATX power cable on it, for my old Motherboard I only had a 4pin plugged in as on the board it was only 4pin not 8. However I have set my new one up with only a 4pin plugged in, it runs fine and I cant yet see a problem with it but I am worried that it may damage my CPU (I Dont have my 2500k Overclocked). Would it be safe to leave the 4pin cable plugged in or would you recommend buying an adapter? I really didn't want to have to buy another PSU.

(I play all sorts of games on it from BF4, DayZ, Crysis etc) - Added info if it effects the power usage at all.

I have yet to see a PSU with a heat pipe, let alone two. You may want to check this. Can you find the exact model?

It's likely two four pin connectors that join up to form an 8-pin.

I am quite sure that's what it is, however I will find out for you. I have x2 4 pins that are joined together on the cable but they don't both fit (the square and rounded edges are in a different order) I've tried all possible rotations and orders.

You need to clip the two halves together before plugging them in. That one definitely has a 4+4 pin CPU connector.

Yeah it does however, it doesn't fit any way at all. The bottom "4 pin" doesn't sit either of the two 4 pins, I thought exactly the same and even took it all out to make sure it wasn't the cables that were too tight to be able to slot in. For example on the motherboard the inputs are the "rounded and squared" holes flipped over so for the first 4 pin at the top its:

Rounded - squared
Squared - rounded

And for the second 4 pin input (at the bottom) its:

Squared - rounded
Rounded - squared

But on my second 4 pin from my PSU its: All rounded apart from one corner which is squared

I hope you can make sense of this!

I was baffled why it wouldn't fit. - Is an adapter worth buying (4 pin to 8 pin) or are these a bit dodgy?

Sorry another question on the same topic.

On my Mobo I have a 24 pin main connector, and on my PSU I have a 20 pin and a seperate 4 pin, am I correct in plugging the 20 pin AND the 4 pin in or should I just be plugging the 20 pin in? I have obtained a 4 pin to 8 pin adapter from work for my PSU to Mobo.

Yes, you need the full 24 pins.

You absolutely need to join the two blocks together before plugging them in. You can't plug in one then the other.

I tried that but it seems like one of the 4 pins is made for a different standard. It simply does not fit due to the type of square and rounded pins. Found out that PSU was made in 2007 since it was given to me by a friend.
