I have a rig built around a QX9650 with a GTX 295. I am considering using that set-up exclusively for racing sims provided that the CPU can handle Assetto Corsa and Project Cars. I was considering upgrading to Windows 10 since it is supposed to FINALLY allow gaming software to utilize all processing cores. I also want to purchase a GTX980Ti to handle the graphics processing. I was initially going to use 3 1080p screens but I'm now considering just using a 4k monitor. Can I use the 9650 to handle Assetto Corsa and Project Cars?

Solution
windows 10 alone will not change anything, it is dx 12 that will change things to a degree, that chip has absolutely no chance of keeping a 980ti fed, it will bottleneck it like crazy, unless you get it to 4,5ghz, not sure about aseto corsa been a long time since I last tried it, but pcars is pretty cpu intensive, you will again be bottlenecked a lot in there, if you clock it to 4.0ghz or above it could perhaps be capable of keeping a 960 level card fed, but anything above that will bottleneck like crazy, a heavily oc'ed g3258 (4,7ghz) or i3 4130 would be a better option

Well, it's not that bad but not great either. Upgrading to Windows 10 won't change anything. DX12 must meet 3 condition for it to work:
1. The hardware must support it, and your GTX 295 won't.
2. The OS must support it - Windows 10 does so this is checked.
3. The game must support it. There is no DX12 out on the market just yet as far as I am aware.

I don't recommend purchasing a GTX980Ti because it will be considerably bottlenecked. Or if you really do want to buy it, consider upgrading the rest of your system as soon as you can.

Thanks. I have an i73820 set-up also and I just ordered 2 GTX970s for it. I wanted to use my old rig with a racing seat and construct a cockpit of a car but I figured that old QX9650 would probably not work well. Maybe I'll build it to play GTR since that's old as heck and one GTX 680 can probably handle it.
