qx9775 lga 771 to lga 775 hack possible?

I am looking for a cpu that would fit my P5Q pro MB...as the 9650 cpu i had burnt out due to fan failure.
I mistakenly bought a qx9775 thinking it would go in to the socket, but soon found it is not supported...only qx9770 fits...

with this cpu now in my hands, and seeing there are hacks for xeon 771 cpu that can be hacked to work on some chipsets and 775 sockets....is it possible to use this qx9775 lga with that hack?.

Just want to know.

Assuming that your motherboard can handle the addition wattage (136w vs 150w), the little strip that adapts a socket 771 to 775, like:

should work, as long as it's installed in the proper area. However, there is no guarantee.

You have to check your motherboard specs and make sure it can handle the 150w.

I'll read into that more...
what I've been seeing is a certain chipset will work..but it says nothing about voltages.

3.4.11 CPU Voltage [Auto]
Allows you to set the CPU VCore voltage. The values range from 0.85000V to 2.10000V* with a 0.00625V interval.
• Refer to the CPU documentation before setting the CPU Vcore voltage. Setting a high VCore voltage may damage the CPU permanently, and setting a low VCore voltage may make the system unstable.
• The value [2.10000V] of the CPU Voltage item is supported only if the OV_CPU jumper is enabled, otherwise the maximum voltage supported is [1.70000V]. See 2. CPU / Northbridge overvoltage setting on page 2-19 for details.
3.4.12 CPU PLL Voltage [Auto]
Allows you to set the CPU PLL voltage. The values range from 1.50V to 2.78V with a 0.02V interval.
3.4.13 FSB Termination Voltage [Auto]
Allows you to set the front side bus termination voltage. The values range from 1.20V* to 1.90V with a 0.02V interval.
The minimum value of this item becomes 1.10V when a 45nm CPU is installed.
3.4.14 DRAM Voltage [Auto]
Allows you to set the DRAM voltage. The values range from 1.80V to 3.08V with a 0.02V interval.

also qx9770 draws 136 vs 150 for qx9775...yet this board claims to be overclockable..with qx9770...that would include voltage minipilation I would imagine, to go above 136 on that tdp listed spec for intel cpu.

with a adapter it should work easily but you also have to modify your mobo socket cause the cutouts are in different positions (and put the processor triangle to triangle on the socket) http://www.overclock.net/t/1384920/good-news-for-the-lga775-now-771-is-available-to-convert-to-775-motherboard. Same issue. But its not as simple as adapter. Not sure but Harpertown CPUs may precede VRD 11.VRD 11.1 standards used for LGA775 socket and use VRD 10. Cannot find out for sure (VRD is Voltage Regulator Down standard used to supply CPU voltages and associated signaling. Any case I had gotten an X3353 working but so far no joy on X5482/QX9775.

I do suggest that instead of clipping every LGA 775 motherboard to try your QX9775 - take the new Chinese approach and carefully file new notches into CPU. That way resale value of motherboards is retained and you take far fewer gambles if it takes 5-8 motherboards to find a match.

Just be careful not file too close to CPU pins and maybe use a throw away (dead or too slow) 775 CPU to help position notches. Notches just need to be deep enough to allow seating 771 turned 90 degrees. Ebay photos can also help show you which row to position deepest center part of notch. Chinese also have some welding trick for conversion but personally I think the adapter sticker is a lot less hazardous to CPU and likely faster.
