What do you guys think of the Vcard 9800 SE one of my friends just got one and I don't think that it is doing very good as I think the 9600 Pro which is the same price, out proformes it. Any info that might help my friend out with tweaking it? We didn't do extencive tests on it to find out exactly how it proformed on all benchmarkes but it only gets 2500 or so on 3dmark 2003 he is also running a Nforce 2 motherboard and a AMD 2500+ and 256 PC 2700 Ram.

The 9600 Pro STOMPS on the 9800SE.

The 9800SE isn't a 9800 at all, it's just a 9500 NON-PRO with a newer chip revision. The 9500 uses a cut down 9700 chip, the 9800SE uses the same cut downs on a 9800 chip. Both the 9500 non-pro and 9800SE use the same cards and everything. So tell him to get the 9600 Pro or I'll kick his arse.

Yes, I believe it's identicle to their rare 256-bit RAM 9500 Non-Pro.

Yep, the same PCB people used to do the 9500np->9700np conversions on.

And Omegadrive included the R9800SE -> R9800 mod in his drivers (I think it may have been removed with the R9700 - > 9800 mod a week ago, but I'm not sure). I know that it's out there, but it's also a risky proposition (I think it's like 1/4 succesful, whihc is less than the R9500's were, and even then they may have other issues.) Overclockers NZ did a bit on them mnetioning the mod, and the other possible R9800SE (that I still haven't seen any reviews or mention of yet) ;

Yes, well the last time I checked I saw a 100% failure rate for the mod on the 9800SE, but that was a while back. It's completely possible that Powercolor has been sending out "ringers" to the review sites.

They've been rubbed out by the Graphioso! :eek:

Yeah, I have heard of sites doing it, but I think the majority of PEOPLE who've bought the R9800SE so far are people who didn't even know you could do that, nor would even know where to start in order to do the mod.

Time will tell, but I always say buy something based on it's stock/retail performance, don't expect wild overclcocks or softmods to sprinkle fair dust and make the card better, that's a risky use of alot of money. Only if you feel confident in your RMA/return skills should you rely on stuff like that. But I was lucky, and very happy with what I got. I constantly run my card at 456/318 which is less than 40% of the potential overclock availible to me on my card. :smile:
