Good Morning sir, I'm having a bad time on what to choose in 2 processor, i5 7400 or ryzen 5 1400 for gaming and future proofing? I did a little research of this two cpu in terms of gaming, the i5 get slightly high fps vs r5 1400 in games but the usage of this cpu is about to 80-100% while the r5 1400 is reaching 60-70% only, so what i will choose? Please Help me

For gaming i5 7400 is better at stock, Ryzen 5 1400 is better when overclocked. For future ready multithreaded games, Ryzen 5 1400 is better as it has 8 threads.

Both CPUs have similiar TDPs of 65W, but the Ryzen 5 1400 would be more efficient in normal web browsing tasks as it is more efficient per core.

The Ryzen 5 1400 has 4 Cores and 8 Threads (SMT on) at 3.2 GHz while the i5 7400 has 4 Cores and 4 Threads with no hyperthreading at 3.0GHz. This makes the Ryzen 5 1400 30-70% better at multithreaded tasks such as video editing and streaming due to its higher thread count at similiar per core performance.

For gaming which relies on a main thread, the Ryzen 5 1400 clocks at a Turbo of 3.4GHz while the i5 7400 clocks in at 3.5 GHz...

This - and you should have a better upgrade path with future Ryzen generations. AMD have committed to AM4 and maintaining backwards compatibility for some time, while we don't know how long Intel will stick with Socket 1151. If Intel stick with their previous practices, 8th Gen CPUs will have a new socket and be incompatible with 1xx and 2xx series boards.

The i5 7400 has about 10-15% better single thread performance which wpuld translate to slightly better gaming performance due to its higher clock by 100 MHz and a superior architecture Sky/Kaby Lake by 5-10% in IPC.

However it is to be noted that the i5 7400 is locked and cannot be overclocked unless paired with a Z270 BCLK modifier at mich higher cost for a slight overclock.
The Ryzen 5 1400 can be overclocked to 4.0 to 4.2 GHz with an aftermarket tower cooler and 3.6-3.8 GHz on the stock cooler, giving it better single and multi threaded performance than i5 7400 once overclocked.

For gaming, I would recommend the Ryzen 5 1400 if you OC, i5 7400 if you dont plan to.
For all other general purpose, the Ryzen 5 1400 is better.
