Well, basically I'm building a PC that i want to reach high refresh rates at 1080p, with 120+ at high/ultra presets if possible in AAA.

So earlier i was going for a R5 5600X + RX 6600 XT, then i noticed that AMD smart access memory is available for the R5 3600 too, so i did a bit of change of plans and found that i could get a RX 6700XT and still make it fall in the budget (sorta, I'll have to spend a little higher than what i aimed for but it's bearable)

So what should I get? A R5 5600X + RX 6600 XT or R5 3600 + RX 6700 XT?

Assuming I'll not upgrade to 1440p anytime soon and i want it to last as much as possible.

If you are gaming, always spend more money on the GPU, in this case I would choose the R5 3600 + RX 6700 XT.

After all you can resell the R5 3600 later on and snap a R5 5600X in the same motherboard (Im guessing you are going with a B550 mobo ?) instead.

Another choice is to get a B660 mobo + i5 12400 + RX 6700 XT and then you would not need to get a new CPU for a long time.

The cpu determines the best fps you can achieve, the gpu determines at what resolution and game settings you can achieve that fps at. So what is more important, fps or high/ultra settings? If fps I’d go with the better cpu knowing you might need to compromise on game settings in gpu heavy games. If high/ultra settings are more important than fps then go gpu.

However take a look at these

As the resolution goes up, the load will lean towards the gpu, so your resolution and fps will determine your cpu gpu combo. For eg, ryzen 5 3600 does a almost on par job at 1440p or 4k with an RTX 3070 when compared to a 5600x, so if it's high fps 1080p then the load will be on the cpu side, so finalise the resolution then but the combo

IM guessing youre going with a B550 mobo ?
Yes, a MAG B550 tomahawk, and if to nip off just a few amount of bucks, a B550M mortar (I'm going for an all MSI build tbh)

If high/ultra settings are more important than fps then go gpu.
Actually i just want to game at ultra everywhere while making use of this 144Hz panel as much as possible, i don't necessarily want 120+ fps, even 80-100 is good enough, but atleast at high/ultra presets (i love my eye candy)

Funnily enough, here in india the Ryzen 5600X is much more expensive than the 3600, that's why I want to go with the same.

so finalise the resolution then but the combo
Tbh I'll stick to 1080p, I've got a monitor that's big enough and i won't be changing for quite a nice amount of time.

As your primary goal is high/ultra detail then the gpu is priority in my opinion.

I'd argue the cpu to be the priority. The target is 1080p? It doesn't take as much graphics horsepower to max that out like it used to, say 7 years ago?
The cpu's going to age better than the gpu will, and the OP doesn't appear to be obsessed with 'muh eFF-Pay-eSs'.

Right now in india the price of Ryzen 5 3600 is 18K which is 3K higher than the price for which i bought, As for Ryzen 5 5600X they sell it for 22K which is understandable,

Your choice depends upon what you wanna do, since you game at 1440p, you can go for 3600XT with a good GPU, and upgrade to 5600X later so that you can keep the motherboard, otherwise for the next series you have to change the mobo for AM5. 1440p is leaning on the GPU side, so as i said buying a 5600X now then you have a option of only upgrading to higher cpu within the 5000 series.

That's true, I'm not the 'oh no i ain't hitting 500 fps in Valorant, my life is ruined' type of guy, i just want to use my 144Hz, I'll be fine even if i don't get the whole of it.

And yes, the target is 1080p, tbh it's the first pc I'll build, so I'll take my time with it, it's not like I'm ordering the components as soon as I'm certain, I'll take it slowly and steadily for now. Hopefully that the prices will come down so that i could get a 5600X along with the 6700XT

since you game at 1440p
I think there was a misunderstanding somewhere, I'm at 1080p and don't feel the need to go higher either.

Also, the 5600X is 25.6K here on Amazon, which 'shop' are you using, ebay or Newegg?

If you are goingt o take it slow, then this all conversation is probably useless.
With prices going all over the place and changing every couple of days time, then whatever we suggest today may not be the best solution in a month (or even next week).

But if prices allows you to do so then, as I wrote earlier, I would aim for the i5 12400 + B660 mobo + RX 6700 XT.

Whatever you do don't cheap out on the PSU.

If it's 1080p, then you can go with 5600x and the rtx 3060, which will do for high refresh 1080p gaming, certain dealers if you buy directly offers 1500inr less than the amazon price of 24500. So if you gonna game at 1080p then 5600x is the best option or you can go for Intel.

Agree 1080p does not require the level gpu it used to. The 6700XT averaged 137fps in Tom’s review across 13 games. It’s tough as I agree cpu is key to highest fps but as the OP was more concerned about ultra settings I was swaying more to the 3600 & 6700XT.

Okayy, so instead of taking a 6700XT and a 'weaker' cpu, i should go for a 3060 and a stronger one.

What about the 6600XT? or (if i could get one for a reasonable price) a 3060Ti with an i5 11400?
Yes getting the balance right to the resolution is way to go, Intel has improved a lot now, and single core performance has always been Intels strength, so you can choose Intel too, like the 12400, but for the Intel to work well you might need spend more on the motherboard side for Intel as compared to amd in Intel sometimes the feature rich motherboard tends to be pricey. So compare cpu gpu combo and then buy.

Gotta take time into account too - how often one would be looking to change out parts.
I'm not one to upgrade every year or 2, so a nice, fast cpu is going to carry its weight further than the next tier up in the most recent gpu generation.
If the OP 'gotta upgrade' every year or 2, then maybe gpu > cpu... If this was for 4K, then definitely gpu > cpu.

It does push the gpu, sure, but ultra pushes cpu a little too... it isn't well optimized though, as some videos - like the ones you linked - have shown.

Agree, all valid points. For me it was a close call but I fell on the side of the gpu but I can see why you/others may choose cpu. Hoping the open discussion will give the OP points of view to consider from both options. Either option is going to be a good setup.

The 3600 is a hose job.

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 $272.99

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X $269.00

This board should be hitting the shelves in the US within the next 2 - 3 weeks for right around $150. Pair it up with a $200 i5 12400F.

Thanks for all your replies, everyone, I'll pick the best option for me out of everything y'all said yet.
What happened to 3600 will happen to 5600x tomorrow, so choose wisely cheers.
