R7 1700/i7 7700k

Solution

That was the original launch yes. But Ryzen threw Intel into overdrive, pushing up multiple product launchs/increasing core counts on HEDT. The rumor is that Coffee lake is to launch this August though some rumors have it as late as November. While this is all rumor and could be wrong Intel has been on the offensive (you could argue defensive after their slide show this week). Point being it is very likely we will see coffee lake before the end of the year so intel can claim 6C/12T i7s/ 6C/6C i5s in the mainstream. See below...

i'd wait for coffee lake which is rumored to launch next month bring 6C/12T CPUs to the main stream. If you were forced to buy now things are tougher. The i7 7700K is better at the moment in games but that has already started to shift with Devs patching their software. In a couple years time Ryzen will likely be better. Plus many games already use 8+ cores like Witcher 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider, The Division, GTA V...then you have games that will use every thread you have (16+) like BF1, Watch Dogs 2, Ghost Recon the Wildlands, etc. This list will only grow and make quad core CPUs a thing of the pat for gaming. It is a question of how quickly this will happen. Personally I'd go with the R7 1700 but I could see why someone would go the other way too.
