i can get a r7 1700 for about $230, but ive also had ppl recommend me a i5 8600k instead for around the same price, why are ppl recommending the i5 over the r7? i understand the clock speed differences and single core strength, but the r7 has 16 threads comapred to the 8600k 6.. is an i5 stronger than the r7?
also, if i go with the i5 ill have to buy another cooler to overclock. so thats an extra 60-100 dollars
i will be doing recording and some streaming, and some coding/compiling and such

Since "recording and some streaming, and some coding/compiling" is your major usage, go with 1700, 16 threads will beat 8600k fair and square.

They assume your major usage is gaming, which is mainly decided by single core strength, and that is why 8600k will win :)

If this is for gaming, then yeah, the 8600k is the stronger chip.
If this is instead for work related tasks, then the 1700.
The 1700 may have more threads, but they are weaker than on the 8600k, plus not many games are programmed to use that many threads anyway(up to 8).
