So i recently got a ryzen 2700X and ran it at auto everything and it began to crash games with my new gtx 1080ti. after forcing the clock speed to 3.7ghz and leaving the voltage alone, it was fine. I then discovered that 3.7ghz just isn't enough, and went for 3.8, 3.9, and 4ghz, all of which crashed my game on both auto and manual voltage settings. At 4ghz @1.28v, it crashed. at 3.9ghz, at auto voltage, it crashed, at 3.8ghz @ 1.1265V, games crashed. from battlefield 1 to shadow of war, games are dropping like flies. system:
GTX 1080 TI EVGA SC2
MSI gaming plus x470
Corsair vengeance 16gb ddr4 2133mhz
EVGA 650W psu gold plus certified
R7 2700X
250GB samsung 960 EVO M.2 SSD

all bios have been flashed and all drivers are up to date. just whenever it's overclocked past 3.7, it goes nuts.
thanks

Should have saved yourself some money and got a cheap R5 1600 for $100. See:
https://www.microcenter.com/product/478826/ryzen-5-1600-32ghz-6-core-am4-boxed-processor-with-wraith-spire-cooler

And then overclock it to 4.0 GHz on air. Easy to do and get you basically the same gaming performance as a 2700x. See my OC-ed R5 1600
https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/12409505

And see the 2700x do roughly the same for games.. some random 2700x with a GTX1070 for comparison:

If you can't OC your 2700x, I would return and refund it asap. Because it is too expensive to be this lousy.

Well I’d love to have good gaming performance but my goal is also to stream. I just recently got a GTX 1080 TI and don’t want to squander its potential. I don’t want to rma something without checking other possibilities. If I overvolt would that generate higher wattage usage. If so, could it be crashing from my psu size?

yep. i found out that the ram has a max speed of 2666mhz and that it was underclocking it for some reason. after upping the voltage to 1.3ghz+ the crashes have stopped. think i took an L in the silicon lottery.
