Hello, I have been looking to buy an alienware x51, with:

i7 4790
8gb ddr3 1600 ram
blue ray player
1tb sata 6gbps 7200rpm hdd
and for the graphics card, i can either get r9 270 or 270x. the 270x will add 50$ to the price.

i am on a tight budget, and the games i play are spore, minecraft, garrys mod, and war thunder, dayz. I want to know if its worth getting the 270x over the 270, how much it will affect my performance on these games.

Also, are the graphics cards in alienware x51s overclockable, or will they overheat?
thanks in advance for your help

* and no herpes for you. um......... yay *

Solution
There's not much difference between the two(2-5% at stock-to-stock in favor of 270x). R9 270 can be overclocked to get at the level of a stock R9 270x.

At $50 price difference, stick with R9 270. For about $10 price difference btw 270 & 270x, R9 270x is the way to go.

The graphics card can be overclocked in X51 but since it is mini-ITX case which limits the overclocking headroom and a high OC will result in overheating of GPU, though a mild OC will be fine.

If you look at the specs, they are basically identical with the same core count, ROP units count, texture mapping units count, 2GB of 256-bit GDDR5 memory, etc. The only differences I can see are the core clocks. The 270x has a higher core clock which you can easily get if you OC the 270. Alienwares should allow you to OC the GPU but how much depends on how well the case keeps them cool. It appears to be a very slim case so unless there are a bunch of fans in it or vents near the GPU, you might be limited in how high you can go. It will also depend on exactly what type of GPU it is and if it is non-reference or reference.

Also, I had an Asus R9 270X that I recently sold. It is a decent mid range card but don't expect either the 270 or 270x to play the latest games maxed out in 1080p. It will struggle to play games like Watch Dogs anywhere near max detail. I replaced it with a HD7950 boost and in the same exact system I am running Watch Dogs maxed out with over 30 FPS in 1080p. That 7950 boost only cost me about $200. The 270X cost me $190. It is way better mainly because of the 3GB 384-bit VRAM.

sorry to interrupt like this.... in my country r9 270 cost is 225 $ and r9 270x cost 270 $ 🙁 so i have planned to buy the 270 and oc it to match the speed of r9 270x but then i heard that overclocking gpu reduces its life by 25 - 50 % so i am now scared and confused about buying it ..🙁 is it true ??

does it really matter, its not like your going to keep it for 5+ years, you will upgrade before it gives out anyway
