So I've got these two GPUs-

XFX R9 270X 2GB

&

MSI R7 370 4GB

I've checked on Passmark for benchmarks and the R9 should be better but I've also been told the opposite by a few friends since the R7 has twice the VRAM.

Could anyone give me a definitive answer and maybe an explanation? Much appreciated!

I checked some benchmarks and actually the 270x is about 10% faster at stock clocks. It uses about 30% more power than the 370.

2gb at 1080p is fine as those cards don't have the core power to benefit from more. Some games are using 3gb at 1080p (cod games from last 2 yrs for eg), but 2gb is fine for the x70 cards.

Id go 370 and overclock it

the 300 series is an improved revamp of the 200 series and has more RAM. the X on the 270 may mean it is slightly faster but the 370 is still an improved design and will more than likely yield better fps at the same or better settings.
also the 300 series is reported to have better driver support through AMD.

you say you have both? try them both in the same system with the same benchmarks using the same settings and you will have a definitive answer.
