Hey guys its my first time upgrading my custom pc and I ran into a huge speed bump. I'm a noob so I don't know much but thanks to forums and google I'm willing to give it a go.

My system specs are: mobo - gigabyte ga-ma790fxt-ud5p
Processor -Amd phenom II x3 720
Memory- 6140 mb
Page file- 2353 mb used, 10162 mb available
Windows vista sp2 updated at least every 2 weeks.
Old gpu was ati radeon 4870 diamond.
Now i bought a 270x sapphire. Before removing old gpu i went to device manager and uninstalled driver since i read that i must do it first. I also read that i should go into bios and disable integrated graphics however o thought i shouldnt mess with bios since im just switching cards. Upon restarting the pc i ran cd with installation to no avail. Error installation of package failure from catalyst control installer. Tried again and no errorhowever the pc not using 270x driver. After a few uninstalls and re installs i tried messing with bios but nothing there to disable integrated graphics just to switch which gpu to use first in case of multiple gpus. Device manager shows as display device as standard vga adapter with yellow cuation. Dxdiag showing no gpu under display tab. Help please. Before buying i looked into making sure everything was compatible and i didnt find no conflicts. Psu is a cosair 550 watts

Edit: just read another post where another member ran into the same problem. His solution was that he installed another catalyst driver or software and it worked. My problem is i tried that as well. I visited sapphire for drivers and amd. Amd not showing drivers for vista when before i bought the card was said to be vista compatible. Im going to keep looking. Any links to drivers and such will be appreciated.

Solution
Vista drivers:
I just looked and they do NOT exist!! Oddly they do as far back as XP, and even are there for Linux.

After I Googled around it appears AMD has dropped support for Vista completely.

You appear to have only THREE options:

1. Don't use the new card.
2. Upgrade to Windows 7/8 (recommend W8 with Start8)
3. Get an NVidia card instead.

I don't know if you have the option to SEND THE CARD BACK with minimal penalty then get something like a GTX770 (Asus, MSI or Gigabyte). If not, your cheapest option is Windows 8. It's $90 for the 8.1 64-bit version (make sure it's 64-bit).

If it matters, you MIGHT find the GTX770 with three free games (codes) included. One place said Nov 26th but another place said Jan 31st 2014 so I don't...

Solution

I'll check on refund policy but is it really the reason why it won't work? I really dont want to spend more money now and nvidia does cost more for equal or lesser product but i do here nvidia can be dependable. However my pc is amd built if im correct. Again im noob at this so i can be wrong but My processor is amd, the motherboard says crossfire on pcie slots instead of sli, had an amd gpu. Is it ok to throw in there a nvidia card with amd components? Does anyone else has other solutions?

I have exactly the same problem with very similar mainboard: Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-UD4H (also with 790GX chipset), Vista 32bit and Sapphire Toxic R9 270X..
Windows device manager reports some strange hardware conflicts between chipset and graphics card.
Graphics is recognized as standard VGA.
Still fighting for solution.
