R9 280 Defective or set up wrong?

Hey guys, for black friday I ordered a Sapphire Dual-x R9 280 3GB video card from Newegg. Package got here earlier today and I was excited to get it running. I removed my old R7 260x and carefully inserted the R9 280. When i went to boot, however, the BIOS replied with one long beep and two short beeps. Now i know this is usually a sign that the GPU is defective, but i wanted to make sure before i went through RMAing. So, what could be causing this besides defectiveness? I took it to a friends computer and it booted up with no beeps, but no display was going through. Here are my specs. I can give you guys more information if needed.

PSU: Raidmax 600af 600w
CPU: Phenom II x4 955 BE
RAM: 8GB G.Skill 1333 MHZ
MOBO: MSI 870a-G54

Have you tried updating your motherboard BIOS?

I looked at my MOBO's latest updates and the last one was in 2012 and it was only for a "PS/2 gaming keyboard fix"

It could be that your mobo is not compatible with the GPU. You should ask sapphire support to see what they say
