r9 280 graphics card power supply requirement?

A friend of mine gifted me a XFX r9 280 graphics card. I want to use it in my next budget build but am not sure what power supply it needs. On their website it says the minimum is 750 watt but reading other posts, they say 550 watt is enough. What amount do I need?

550W is more than enough. Just make sure it's a decent unit. This OCZ ZT is nice and it's fully modular:

What CPU do you own?

Usually, 750W for generic PSUs. 550W-600W for 80+ certified PSUs.

Generic PSUs are know for not delivering what they claim.

PSU 750watt is more than enough o power up R9-280 including the system.. Manufacturer recommends higher power than actual power draws by gpu from psu, maybe because of some other references.

Hi - As the others have said, a good quality 550w PSU is more than sufficient.
However, I recommend you avoid the OCZ PSU suggested above. OCZ is in bankruptcy, and
although Toshiba has acquired their SSD assets, I don't believe another company has picked
up the PSU line, so warranty service (or any PSU parts needed) could be a problem.

FirePower owns OCZ now. Nothing wrong with that PSU, in fact it's a great deal.

FirePower owns OCZ now. Nothing wrong with that PSU, in fact it's a great deal.

You are correct that Firepower bought the PSU assets, but it appears so far that Firepower is only going fwd
with PC Power & Cooling PSU's.

Sorry but you're mistaken. On OCZ's warranty website they state that Firepower will continue to honor the warranty obligations of their acquired psus.
