I can get them for the same price,i have a decent power supply so that isnt a concern the r9 280 is pretty much in mint condition, and the gtx 10502gb is brand new.Which one should i go for?

Solution

if ur case fits it, i suggest u get that then :) it's better than both R9 280 and 1050 performance-wise :)

Yeah the r9 280 performed better in just a couple of games, and the 1 extra gigabyte of vram can't even be utilized because it can't run anything at higher than medium settings right?

i'll go with the 1050:
1. brand new means warranty
2. power consumption is much lower (75w vs 200w for almost the same amount of performance)
3. real-world performance doesn't really differ too much

if u had a little more to spend, going with the 1050ti is recommended (depends on the games u want to play though...)

Yeah it isn't really an option since the 1050ti,where i live is more or less a $100 more than the 1050,considering the 1050 price is already way too high compared to the us/uk prices.

Also i could get a gtx 770 2gb model for about that price

you need to link v ram to resolution,
so it will use that 3gb from he r9 280 fully, however .... you cannot compare graphics cards spec wise.
Its just reality, some gamesare coded in that way.

Ive got a 1050 on my laptop (and thats a lower peformance desktop variant) and im really happy with it.

sorry to hear that...
the GTX 770 perform similarly to the 1050ti but will still consume more power and u will be pretty much VRAM limited with it...

but since ur PSU can handle it, i think it would be a better buy than the GTX 1050, performance-wise...

I could get the gtx 770 2gb model for the same price as the gtx 1050/r9 280 but i doubt it'll give me better performance?Maybe in older games

As i said previously,it is not an option the third option would be a used gtx 770 2gb palit 3 fan version.

if ur case fits it, i suggest u get that then :) it's better than both R9 280 and 1050 performance-wise :)

Solution
Agreed. GTX1050.

I looked up some videos to be sure from DigitalFoundry:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyYvoQPYPbs

It uses a GTX960, but you can swap that for a GTX1050 for most games:
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1050_Gaming_X/27.html

In the Digitalfoundry video we see the GTX960 win or tie. I'm sure the R9-280 would tend to do better in more modern DX12/Vulkan titles (like DOOM) but not enough to justify a USED CARD.

I do agree the 2GB of VRAM isn't much of an issue. There's probably just a COUPLE games that could go over 2GB of VRAM at 1080p/1440p whilst tweaked to hit 60FPS or close, and if you got STUTTERS you should just experiment with the settings (like dropping anti-aliasing from 4xMSAA to 2xMSAA for example).

I had a GTX680 2GB until 2016 Q4 and the only game at reasonable settings that had issues that I noticed was Watch Dogs but that was a horribly optimized game anyway (and they patched it later, though not sure if 2GB is enough... but stay away anyway).

OTHER:
*To be clear, with at least 8GB system memory, and a half decent CPU you can play almost ANY game and have a good experience. Even Crysis looked great, and I ran it at 60FPS (90% of the time) using Adaptive VSYNC, 1920x1080, HIGH, 2xMSAA or similar settings.

OTHER:
A few games like GTA5 (at least for me) have serious stutter/judder if VSYNC is ON and you drop below the target (i.e. 60FPS on 60Hz monitor). I fixed that (on GTX1080) by forcing Adaptive VSYNC so the occasional drop below 60FPS now just gives a little screen tearing (VSYNC OFF automatically below target).

If interested, here's how:
start and close game, then
NCP-> manage 3d settings-> add game (if just closed it's at top) -> (adaptive vsync) -> save

As long as it hasn't been dogged to death the 770 but I personally always get nervous buying used I just don't trust people to tell the truth so I would get the 1050 my self but the 770 if it's in great condition and we'll taken care of and you trust the seller go with that.

I have an i7 3770k at 4.0ghz and 8gb of generic 1333mhz ram,but is the gtx 770 better than it?

uh what r u comparing really?

GTX770 is roughly 10 to 15% faster compared to a GTX1050, on average

However,
- GTX1050 is new, with full Warranty
- has better DX12 and VR support (mostly a non-issue for both.. UPDATE: GTX1050 meets minimum GPU spec but insufficient VRAM. Oculus Rift calls for GTX1050Ti though I doubt you care about VR anyway)
- has H265/HEVC decode support
- support for 4K@60FPS
- support for HDR
- NEWER CARDS tend to get higher driver priorities as time goes on

Not enough to justify the small GTX770 advantage.

I guess I agree with you,and the gtx 770 uses alot of power too.

Sure, and to give an actual link (just assume GTX960 is about 2% faster than GTX1050):
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_960_Gaming/29.html

And the i7-3770 will still do fairly nicely with a GTX1050. Up until a year ago I had an i7-3770K (at 4.4GHz) + GTX680 so pretty similar to what he'll have, and I gamed at HIGH, 1080p (some 2560x1440), 60FPS mostly testing 100+ games.

*SKYRIM runs at 1080p/60FPS but avoid any demanding GPU mods. (not sure about Skyrim SE)

well i did say it from performance perspective...

1050 still have the warranty + all the bits and pieces of support from the newest driver until Volta released

honestly though, after seeing ur system, u could've save up and choose a better GPU, that CPU is strong enough to handle even the 1080 :0

Don't care about skyrim, more of a fallout guy lol

both games depends on mods

Constantine_99,
Considering the GTX1050Ti is out of his budget... and yes, he can handle any graphics card on the market and most games would still be GPU bound at 1440p.

Also, prices are still messed up especially in other countries due to cryptomining. A GTX1050 is relatively cheap and may also recoup much of its cost later as USED, and then a GTX1080 or better will be a lot cheaper.

Also VOLTA release is unknown anyway, but I get the impression that it could be at least Q2 2018, and even if that happened a good after-market card could drag out a few more months.

*PLUS I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AVOIDING NEW ARCHITECTURE until at least six months after launch to get drivers sorted out. There are all sorts of issues that tend to crop up including issues with older games that are a low priority to solve.
