I know this has been asked many times before, but i just can't come up with a solution myself. I recently bought a r9 280 on sale it was 170 at my local frys. To be more specific its the xfx dd version. So when i bought it i looked up that it needs a strong psu to back it up.some people say 600w 550 500 ect and its all confusing. I would like to know what psu I should get and if possible, have it be under 50$. The psu I have is a 350watt so I definitely need a upgrade. I have a 600w coolmax on hand but after reading about it online I'm pretty hesitant to use it. I could return it, as I still have the receipt. What should I do guys?I can add specs need be

Manufacturer's will recommend a higher wattage because there are low quality psu that are in the market.
A decent quality 550W will power almost any single graphic card. An exception would be AMD R9 390X and AMD Fury X where a decent...

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/KZTwvK I can't find the r9 280 from the part list but that would be there if I could. also the Ram i'm not 100% sure of, I just know it's 16 gb same for the storage, just know it;s one tb

The XFX 550W will be fine:

alright, so what 550w would you recommend? I'd prefer it to be around 50$, 60 at the most

But what you failed to mention is.. if you ever have a problem and need to write a support ticket for a GPU.. the FIRST thing they will ask or check is whether you are using THEIR RECOMMENDED PSU... and if you aren't.. they will tell you to first upgrade to their minimum wattage before they would be willing to help you.

That would be the rep just reading from the script. There are plenty of prebuilt pc that will also use 550W-650W in a R9 280/R9 280X and they will still work. If you stated that you confirmed the gpu is at fault, they should not ask you about the psu, not that it matters if you have a decent one.
A decent 550W will power a R9 280 build quite easily.

Actually, that's incorrect. During the ticket process you have to enter in your system PC parts during the initial process before a tech contacts you. Also, the asker of this question inquired about the two PSU's he currently has, none of which he currently has would be good enough to power the card. So I still believe my initial comment is valid and correct.
