R9 280 PSU requirement

On the AMD website, the connectors for the R9 280 is set out as 1 x 6-pin and 1 x 8-pin. That means it needs power as follows:

PCIe slot: 75W
6-pin: 75W
8-[in: 150W

Total of 300W. That's for the base model and does not include overclocking - either by you or by the OEM of the GPU.

I would not run that in less than a 650W PSU, maybe a tad more even.

Edit: Quick back-of-the-envelope math:

GPU: 300W
CPU: 88W
Motherboard: 25W
HDD: 25W
RAM: 15W?
Fans: 7W per fan.
USB: ??

I get very close to your 550W by this type of calculation. :)

Hi - Nice PSU for that build. Usually, you get the TS model (which is Haswell ready) when you order that
PSU, you might want to double check & be sure. You can still use the PSU if it's not Haswell ready by
disabling the c6/c7 sleep function in BIOS.

Just because it has the connections doesn't mean it will use that much power. Even a factory overlclocked r9 280 only uses 172w a stock one will use closer to 150w.
