Hi, I'm playing Civ 6 and was curious to which card would be better for the task. PSU not a problem. I have a i7-4700. 16gb ddr3. I just happen to get a 1050 from a friend.
performance wise they probably about equal. but CIV series usually running much faster on nvidia hardware. with the latest CIV 6 even when running with DX12 the game still running faster on nvidia hardware.
I don't think it'll make that much of a difference. At higher settings, that game can use more performance than either of those cards can manage. At lower settings then both cards will do about as well as the other.

So I ran some benches between the 2 cards and the 1050 looks to be the winner for me. Sheesh, I'm really surprised. I set software on both tests for performance mode.
FRAME TIMES
1920x1080 ULTRA (2x) | Medium | Minimum
R9 280: 28.703ms | 17.774ms | 15.438ms
GTX 1050: 21.974ms | 13.436ms | 11.233ms
I wonder if there's a setting I'm missing on the Radeon card that it's not competing here? Open to suggestions.
Plus, my system is like 20c-30c cooler, DAYUM!
My bad, I shouldn't assume everyone owns Civ 6. It's the Civ 6 GPU bench from the game menu.
as i said nvidia hardware usually faster when running civilization series if the setting is equal. i think the game simply runs better on nvidia architecture. GTX970 for example is more or less equal to RX470 but in CIV 6 970 is even ahead of AMD RX580. and that is using DX12 where it always give AMD cards the edge to be faster than GTX1060 in performance.
Right, good looking out. I'm just learning about all this. I'm surprised that with 1792 shader units (r9 280) vs 640 (gtx 1050) shader units, plus everything else the R9 280 has going for it that 1050 can shine here. I guess it's in the software and the higher clocks that Nvidia has?
