R9 280 vs R9 280X?

There's a £30 price difference, is this worth the performance, considering many games may not even utilize the extra stream processors, catering for the consoles considerably lower count?

Personally £30 is worth it depending on what gpu cooler you are getting with and you can overclock a R9 280X further.

The XFX black for the R9 280, MSI Twinfrozr for the R9 280X?

Well either card is fine for 1080p gaming. Of course the R9 280X is the higher performing card. I would say the MSI gpu cooler is slightly better than the XFX one.
Also make sure you have enough amps on the 12V rails with at least 40 amps. Make sure you stick to well-known brands. Avoid Corsair CX and CS series. Stick to Antec, Seasonic or XFX.
