Hello,

A friend brought me a new r9 280x as a gift. My current system specs are :

Q6600
Asus p5n e sli
4gb ram
750w psu

Playing at 1920x1080 res.
I want the pc mostly for gaming.

I know that q6600 will bottleneck the R9, but i am currently a student and my pc will be at home so i dont want to spend 350 - 400 pounds for cpu mobo ram upgrade and play with the computer just a few months of the year.

My question is : how big is the difference, lets say in fps, between an i7 and a q6600?

Thank you in advance

It depends on the game, anywhere between 10-20fps, but the problem will be mostly FPS drops from time to time.
It depends on the processor speed necessary for the game, i noticed even with a 7950 when i installed it in a Q6600 PC. I was able to run bioshock infinite on ultra (which is kind of a lightweight game) but it crashed once every 3 hours i believe.

You will probably not have this issue but in either way, your graphics will look nicer and it is compatible.

There is only one way to find out and that is to test it out for yourself, see if it will bother you, you probably wont notice a thing.

I think you would notice immediately. I know I did. I had a Q9550 and I upgraded to a 3750k at Thanksgiving. There is a huge performance difference between the two. Tom's did a review about this last year. One thing to know, in the majority of games on the market, they don't support HyperThreading. So the i7 has little performance difference over the i5.

Your post only confirms what i already said, 10-20fps :p, he said he doesnt have any other option as he doesnt want to spend for a new setup. I merely confirm its ok to roll with the setup and either way will have improvement over his old GPU.
