I just built my first computer, within a week ago. Everything seemed to working ok, i was just trying to check and make sure everything was up to snuff. Everytime i would download the Catalyst drivers so the system would recognize my 280x as a 280x instead of a 7970 i would get quite a lot of 2d screen flickering. XFX recommended that i update my bios from a file they had stored. Well after I updated the bios, the flashing went away completely but now i face another issue. It seems anytime i get the GPU to 50c the card shuts down, cuts off the signal to my monitor but my tower is still running. It has messed with the sound when it happens im not sure what sort of correlation there is there. Ive tried using bench marking program and GPU-Z to find out as much as I can to try and diagnose this problem.

When I tried furmark, it ran for a couple seconds, temperatures spiked to 50c pretty fast, and i lose signal.

I tried OCCT GPU benchmark and the same sort of graphic pops up, but it doesnt move at all, but the program acts like everything is perfectly normal, i have to run occt with 1 shader complexity. doesnt last long, when i see it hit 50c when i review my logs it shuts down, but the tower is still running.

Before I upgraded the bios I had the screen flickering but I was able to bench the gpu and get temps of around 80c, so im thinking theres something that happened with the bios, im not really sure how to get it back to where it was, or a driver that works better for me.

EDIT: Ive got a 4690k i5
z97-ud5h mobo
212 evo hsf
running on window 8.1
850w EVGA PSU

Honestly just get a GTX, something is not right with these AMD cards, i dunno if it is bios or drivers or what but something is causing alot of them to not perform as they should. What is on paper is not producing in results some how
Grr I dont like this card. So i tried flashing bios with one i found on techpowerup and it wrecked my computer for about an hour had to go on integrated and go back to bios that xfx gave me. Now everything works normal. I dont feel like i can trust this card. I dont quite understand either NCIX/XFX Return policy. Could i just get out of this card, get a refund and get some of the newer 290x/290s that have had a price drop recently, or even a GTX 970? paid 330 before MIR for this card.

ok i lied, i was about 30 minutes into gaming, lol and then wow, and the monitor went black, speakers stuttered, and had to restart. Hopefully i can return this card and get a 290 or 290x, or be better off with a 970

This time it happened with about 70% GPU load and gpu temps at 66c

Thanks for the reply crabby. I did notice more stability using amd overdrive and underclocking it to 1000MHz. In the end I had a practically brand new card not doing what it was supposed to so i sent it back to rma yesterday to NCIX and im probably gonna try to get me a cheaper GTX 970 or maybe a 290/290x since the prices just dropped.

I was really excited to buy my DD black edition, and this is my very first computer build. Ive just had nothing but problems and when im spending 300$ on a piece of hardware, i dont want to settle for less than advertised and gimp myself with underclocking it. Im leaning very heavily on a 970, might spend a little more but im already 330 Deep i ddint use MIR so ill shell out a little less than 100$ and get me a nice 970. Thanks crabbypatties im glad im not alone on this one.

your welcome, i know how it feels man, it sucks balls honestly. I might be able to get it back up to core clock but im too scared to try as it is stable now and i dont want to throw everything off again. My next card will no doubt be a nvidia card again also. AMD is great cards, but they are just not volted right, clocked right, built right something. If you get lucky enough to get a good one they are perfect, or so i read lol. If not have lots of tylenol and patience.
