Hello everyone,

I have an R9 280X and I noticed that the GPU usage drops often, therefore causing a drop in FPS. The temperature is around 65C, never going past 70C. The CPU usage is always stable. I have never OC'ed and the clocks and voltages are stock currently. Any help appreciated :)

Many thanks.

Solution

Well the thermal throttle point for that card is 66c I believe or around there. Not much you can do but to increase Gpu fan speed or try and improve airflow in your case. can you tell me about how many fans you have for airflow in your case? (also is this on games or like stress tests)

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know the throttle point was 66C. I have 5 fans, 2 exhaust and 3 intakes.

I will test it next by putting the GPU fans to 100%, however that didn't seem to help last time. I will test again this time keeping an eye on the 66C throttle point. Many thanks.

Different manufacturers set it differently based on their cooling designs I believe. also 80c+ is pretty bad haha

Yeah I have a panic attack every time my gpu hits one degree over 70c. His is a Diamond, never even heard of a Diamond manufacturer.

Me neither. my load is always 61c or lower. Throttle point on my 295x2 is 72c I believe.

Sorry for the late reply. I just tested the GPU while playing Rust, and I can confirm that the GPU usage drops were still occurring even before the 66C mark. I'm currently in the process of RMA'ing my PSU which makes strange noises under load, could this be the issue?

could be. Is it from a reputable company? post your exact Psu and full system build please 😀

Solution

Oops pressed the best solution button instead of reply, sorry! My full build is as below:

CPU: FX-6300
PSU: EVGA 500B
RAM: 8GB G-Skill Ripjawz
SSD: 256GB Crucial MX100

The PSU hasn't made those noises in a while but I still may RMA it just to ensure there are no problems. Also I noticed so GPU usage drops whilst playing GTA 5. So is this a game related bug? Many thanks.

Hm if its not temps its probably the card or the Psu?

Sorry I meant to say there's no drops whilst playing GTA. I guess I'll wait till I get a new PSU and test, but it seems likely that it's a game related bug. Thanks for your time!
