Im upgrading my graphics card and need to know which is better. It s obvious that the 290 is better overall but i have heard that it has problems with cooling. Im looking at the Sapphire R9 290 at the moment but i also like the look of the R9 280X toxic.
I will be playing Battlefield 4 at ultra on a single monitor.

Thanks for the replies

These are all reference cards, they have not listed any of the non reference cards with the better coolers, best to wait for them to be listed and then compare to make your choice, it really is worth the wait.

it doesnt really have problems with cooling. it has problems with cooling quietly. the cooler on the 290 is very capable of cooling the card properly, even overclocked. it is just that it starts to get pretty loud at 40 percent and above. if noise isnt a problem, you could pick one up and even overclock it easily.

if you want something quieter, you are going to have to wait. a 280x is just a downtuned 7970 btw. the 290 is the only new gen card here, and yes, it is quite a bit better.

Thats really up to you, the 290 will get you better performance but also has the chance of cooling problems or you could go with the still very good 280x and feel a little more comfortable about the durability.

The non reference are the cards that are aftermarket and come with the company's own custom cooler, design and features, like the MSI Lightning or EVGA Classified for example. The reference cards are the factory blower type coolers that aren't as good.
