Basically I am looking to upgrade my current card (HD7770) have a limited budget with the R9 280x and R9 380 falling into it.

Looking for advice on which card is better, or if there is another card I should consider.

Thanks in advance!

Both cards are very capable. The 380, while being based upon the 285, has a 4GB version available whereas the 285 did not. I would always recommend the 4GB version in that particular card. Otherwise you may as well get the much less expensive 370. The 370 would be a massive (about 2X) upgrade to your 7770. The 4Gb 380 performs on par (within a couple FPS in most cases) with the 280X but its major strength over the 280X is that it's newer tech, has a more consistent favorable review track record (taking into customer satisfaction from the 285) and it will have longer support - plus it's DX 12, not 11.

The 280X is a great card and they are on sale all over for really great prices. The 280X has very mixed reviews. The 380 seems to be a more stable-reliable card with no real issues.

My choice would be the 380. I have the new Nitro version from Sapphire. It's great. I also have the 270X and found that the 270X was just about as good in single monitor 1080 gaming. So, you might consider the 370 as I have said.

NOW I have to reply and make an account because all that RoadWarrior57 wasn't true. AMD has confirmed that all GCN cards will support DX12. That includes the 280X. So actually 380 will fall beyond 280x's capabilities..
Now.. What I am going to do is pair up my 1 Ghz boosted 280 (No oc) with a 280x in a crossfire which gives me more power than a 370 they will act like a proper 280x pair since 280x will oc the card to the same level. I think it's not official but I heard DX12 supports memory stacking hence giving you 6GB of video memory for future, not to mention the huge fps boost. So if you got the money grab a power supply capable for both cards and enjoy your 980 killer (not sure about Ti though) 280x cf is confirmed to work better in some games than a 980.
I support 280x CF! BEWARE Though.. CF cards have been reported by some, that they have more screen tearing and stuff but I'd be okay with that. If you want to go with 1 card then do what RadioWarrior57 did, go with 380 or heck even 370.

If you want Freesync, the 380, because the 280x doesn't support it (a little bit to old). The 4gb version of the 380, the 2gb isn't that much cheaper, and will limit you at higher resolutions and multi-monitors.

If you don't care about Freesync, and want pure performance, the 280x is what you want. It's more powerful, has a wider memory bus (and speed) and the 3gb of ram is enough.

I had nothing but issues with my Asus 280x had the common artifacts issue when playing games bf4 etc that and damn it ran hot was like 80c non oc in a full tower... I'd go with the 380 I I had the choice to do it all again

Although the 280x might be slightly more powerfull, its architecture (GCN 1.0) is older than the 380 (GCN 1.2) and that can make a big difference in combination with DirectX12 which is around the corner. I think the 380 might be the better choice.
