After changing my mind at least 5 times I've decided to get the 280X, and I don't know what brand to buy it from. I looked on amazon and the ones that interest me the most are gigabyte, msi, and toxic or whatever its called. Which one should I get?

Solution

Ok at the moment, without question and within your budget. I would get the best 280x you could get and its on sale.

The Sapphire R9 280x Toxic - $300 - Amazon has it on sale and so does tiger direct. You may not get charged Tax at all from Tiger Direct and it also has free shipping as well. Definitely a steal.

If you are willing to step it up a notch...

If you are willing to step it up a notch. Both websites are also offering the Sapphire R9 290 for $369

So how much better is the R9 290 than the R9 280X???

They both can definitely use up the 3gb of vram. Really depends on the requirement of the game. The 290 definitely should have enough power to push past the 3gb of vram. Will it happen anytime soon...highly unlikely since games are barely even getting to the 3gb requirement/recommendation. The 290 is also newer technology and not a rebranding like the 280x (7970 Ghz). Thing is also, these newer games that have come out and I'm sure may in the future will do as well, are starting to lock their Ultra setting options from you unless you have a 3gb video card. For example, Wolfenstein The New Order. Something higher end like WatchDogs is another example of much smoother experience due to having at least 3gb vram. Watch Dogs is also a very CPU intensive game.

I personally ordered me a R9 290 to upgrade from my crossfire set up. I ended up ordering from Amazon since I already had half of the price in my gift card balance. So ended up paying the difference out of pocket. Did end up spending $30 than I would've on TigerDirect due to taxes. But again, had amazon credit available.

There are multiple articles on benchmarking between a 280x and 290. Usually about 15-20 FPS difference in gaming. Although it may not be the greatest and needed upgrade from a 280x. At the price of the sale... $300 vs $369...its a really though choice. Which is why I shot for the 290 plus being a Sapphire card, they are very well built and top end cards.

Guys I just saw on a graphics card benchmark test that the 290 was JUST a step up from the 770 for $60 dollars more while on another one the r90 is a huge amount better than the 770. Is it just a touch better or is it a lot better?

Depends what game your playing.. some cases performance is identical, where others there is a 10+fps lead.

Nice! Hope you enjoy the card! Good thing you grabbed while you could. That sale ended for both Amazon and TigerDirect not too long ago.

I ended up getting the 280x Toxic for now. I want to eventually upgrade my CPU, so wanted to put that extra cash into that.

Yup! Some games its a nice 10-15fps lead from what I've seen in many real time benchmark articles out there.

It was on a sale? I didn't buy it!!!!!!!!!! ;(((((((((((

So I just saw that the sale ended for it so I'm lookin on amazon and I see that the Gigabyte r9 290 is $400, only 30 above the sapphire radeon before the sale. Should I get the Gigabyte edition (I heard it has great coolers and I'm not bothered by the noise cause I usually keep my headset volume up pretty high.

In the reviews it says it runs extremely hot even though its from Gigabyte, and I wan't it to last for at LEAST 5-6 years. Would it even last this long seeing that it can be 60c at idle and 90c while gaming?

It can handle up to 90c, this card is known to have around the 70s while gaming while the saphire tri x games around 60-71

As long as you take good care of the card it should be fine. My 9800GTX+ is still running fine without a problem and it's even using the reference cooler.

Oh man, well the 290 is back at regular price of $434.99 now on Amazon and TigerDirect. But, the r9 280x Toxic is still for $299 on Amazon. It really depends on you if you want to spend the extra money or wait.

Honestly...I wouldn't pay that full price for the 290. I'd wait for the sale to happen again, which might be this coming weekend since it's 4th of July weekend and you know there will be sales.

If you really want something now, then at the price of $299 I'd shoot for the 280x Toxic on amazon.

I also saw the sale that RazerZ has mentioned for the Gigabyte card. Hmm at the price point, I'd still strongly consider Sapphire over the Gigabyte card. I've seen the Sapphire R9 290 go for sale as low as $350 on TigerDirect before, and I'm sure something will go on sale again this coming weekend.

It's entirely on you now if you want to wait or not.

We never asked. What is your current configuration? Are you playing on multiple monitors or a higher resolution single display such as 2560x1600?

Looking at TigerDirect again. It looks like you could get the 280x Toxic for $280 after a $20 rebate. They are doing a $20 BACK* on $100 Order or More Special. I included both pages for you.

Good thing with TigerDirect, you won't be charged for taxes on this. So you'll save extra money, and its free shipping.

$299 out the door, and then follow up with a $20 rebate = $280. I'd say that's a worthy sale for that card.

Is the 280x (non overclocked) better than the gtx 770 or how much worse is it. The gtx 770 is 50 bucks more and is it worth it?

The GTX 770 is just slightly faster than a 280x, but soo minimal that it wouldn't really make a difference in real world gaming. But, since games are actually starting to utilize more than 2GB of vram and the GTX 770 having 2GB, you will be held back on some newer games. There are 4GB version of the 770's but for the extra additional price, it is not worth it. For the price of the 4GB 770 you might as well get the R9 290 which would be a much more powerful card than the 770.

Remember, since you are getting the 280x Toxic, that is a Overclocked card out of the box and performs much better than a basic non OC'ed 280x. You're getting a lot more bang for your buck with the 280x Toxic. You can also OC it more if you really wanted to, but hardly think you would need to at all.
