R9 290: 750w 'Required'?

Hey there, hopefully this'll be a quick thread.
I'm long overdue an upgrade, currently still running a 6850, which I imagine to most of the dwellers here is a bit like trying to run modern games on a potato. Certainly not handling metro on that, I assure you.

I was all ready to buy the R9 290 (XFX's version) when I noticed the reccomended power supply was atleast a 750w. Unfortunately I just bought a 600w PSU to replace my previous one a week ago.

So I guess my question is how essential is that extra 150 wattage, when I don't intend to overclock? According to OuterVision's PSU calculator it's reccomending 450w, though I'm aware that may not be incredibly reliable.

I don't really have any desire to buy another power supply so soon after the previous one, so if it's really a bad idea for the R9 290, I'm open to any suggestions.

Thanks.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the PSU I currently have is a Corsair 600CX with Bronze certification.

That's good to hear, did just actually edit the post to add that as you left that response. It's a Corsair 600CX.

Thanks for the quick answer, I'm assuming since corsair is a fairly well-known brand that it should be fine.

Yikes. Those are some conflicting opinions.

I suppose in that case I should probably go for a lower power card, rather than risk buying a more expensive, more power hungry one.
