R9 290 + R9 290X Crossfire?

Solution

You can overclock it all you want and might get 290x performance (fps wise). But youd still be "bottlenecking" the 290x since is simply a better card. Its not simply clocked higher, it also has more stream processors (2816 vs 2560) and more texture units (176 vs 160) which means a part of the 290x will be turning itself off to compensate. You'll end up with some frankenstein monster, likely between the 2x290 CF and 2x290x CF performance wise, and very probably with a few headaches caused by errors from the 290x disabling part of its board to match the 290. I would simply by a second of whichever card you already own if that's an option.

The pain of doing it isnt worth the ~10 fps youll gain from a 290x CF over a 290CF

also theres no way to garrentee that your specific 290 will reach similar clocks as the 290x
