R9 290. Cheaper, and the performance is great. Non-reference of-course ;).
Performances wise though, they trade blows on just about everything. Really comes down to what you plan on doing and your budget.

AMDs run hot, but the Tri-X is more than capable of handling it.
Performance wise, it really comes down to which games/programs your using. Sometimes the Nvidea card will work better, sometimes not.
I've heard the GTX 780 overclocks better, but I don't have any experience with overclocking these cards so I can't really say for sure.

My personal preference would be GTX 780 IF you are only going to be gaming with it.
R9 290 if you are going to be gaming and/or work that is GPU intensive.

This is my opinion, there are many people who would disagree with me either way.

So in conclusion, I would go with a R9 290.

R9 290 for raw power, 4K high resolution gaming? GTX 780 runs slightly cooler and quieter though. They both beat each other in their own games.
