R9 290 Wont boot after driver install

Hi there,

I recently purchased the ASUS Direct CU II OC edition R9 290. I made sure to remove all previous display drivers, using the display driver uninstaller. I plugged in my new graphics card and it booted fine, although the screen had weird lines all over it. I then installed AMD CCC 13.2, however when the PC rebooted it would get to the windows logo and then go to a black screen straight after. I tried rebooting again and it did the same thing.

I then went into safe mode, uninstalled CCC and reinstalled 13.1. Same problem. I've also tried the latest beta drives 14.2. Nothing seems to fix the problem.

I've tried looking online but no one seems to have a solution.

Any help would be much appreciated!

If the card presents weird lines on the screen (and you know the monitor is OK), I'd RMA the card. It sounds like it may be defective.

Yeah I would say lines right off the bat means its bad

Really? I had this happen with a mates r9 270x however, after the driver install it worked fine again :s

To RMA the card would I contact amazon or Asus themselves?

If it is still within the return window, send it back to Amazon for replacement.
When you first installed the card and let Windows install its default driver, did the display problem show up right away? If so, I'd say the card was defective. If the problem didn't show up until the new AMD driver was installed, it might be something else.

The display problem happens straight from the start even on the post screen and in the bios. I guess I will be returning this to amazon :/ I'm using a 650w PSU you don't think that could be a problem do you?

Yes... it could. What is the make/model of the 650W PSU?

I was afraid it may have been a cheap PSU. But the OCZ line is very good. And if yours is like this US model, it has the 'punch' to handle the R9-290. So I would probably rule out the PSU as the issue.
