Hi -

I'm looking to either get a GTX780 (aftermarket cooling great price point, quiet) vs the R9 290x (Awesome price performance). However, the only thing thats keeping me from getting the R9 290x is the 95C heat. (Varying reviews of noise dont bother me too much.)

What is the danger is the GPU giving off that much heat? Lower lifespan of the CPU, and other components ?

Solution

Ah, for 1080p, yes. A 780 would be a great card for this resolution. The 290x really only shines at 4k because of its memory size and large bandwidth. See if you can find some comparisons of current 780 models similar to how Tom's compared 280x models. I'd pick the lowest temp and quietest one.

No, it's not a problem for the other components. The temperature of the GPU isn't equal to the amount of heat the graphics card gives off; the problem with the 290X is actually that the cooler isn't good enough at getting the heat away from the GPU and into the surroundings.

Maybe find one with a water block cooling solution. This card performs better than the Titan in some situations and is a lot cheaper, which justifies the water cooling cost. Also, prices will come down soon from new cards coming out on Nvidia side for the 780.

Solution
It seems most GPUs are running hot these days. Some people are complaining that the 700 series cards from nvidia are running hot too. Not 95c hot, but hot. At 1080p my 770 is running BF4 in high/ultra just fine around 75c.

I have the R9 msi 290 4 gb card and I made a one to one profile using msi afterbuner and I play bf4 on ultra with 66to 72c ,the people that are crying because its too hot (90-95c) because they don't know how to tweak the card I have been playing assassins creed black flag with every thing maxed and my temps are 65c I got this card because it was only £320 I thing it was a smart move from my gtx 660.

Well then you're just getting a very loud graphics card instead.

As long it works and play every game on the market on ultra with top FPS im happy my temps are perfect and I could not give a toss if its loud my pc was loud any ways with all my 9 fans in it so makes no difference and plus I wear corsair 1500 ( dolby7.1) so cant hear me pc .

R9 290 is designed to reach 90c I be more worried when it tops 120c my m8 has a titan which is a one fan card and that reaches 90c so I don't know why people crying these power cards will reach 90c
