Howdy. I just finished by new build and it gave me a backscreen. When I removed my Gigabyte Radeon R9 290X, the system booted fine.

The problem is, whenever I instal the GPU, the system does not display anything on my screen. Is this an indicator of a faulty card or have I done something correctly?

Installation steps:
Slap the card in the slot closest to the CPU.
Tighten screws.
Plug in the 8-pin and 6-pin connecters.
Observe blackscreen on boot.

STEPS TRIED:
Mounted the card.
Remounted card.
Manually installed the drivers and remounted the card.

Important specs:
Asus Z97-A ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Gigabyte Radeon R9 290X 4GB WINDFORCE Video Card

Thanks.

No, unfortunately. The IGPU will only output its video to the MB ports. The card will only output its video to its own ports. Some AMD APUs have the ability to merge the onboard and discrete ports, but not in your case. You have to connect your monitor to the card to use the card. That class of gfx card is one of the few that does not offer DVI-I, just DVI-D. So even using an adapter won't work.

The GPU does not have a legacy VGA input. I would have tried the DVI-D, but the monitors I got do not ship with DVI-D cables.

Also, shouldn't the motherboard be smart enough to handle this case? Like shouldn't it go:
"GPU, this is Mom. Can you speak VGA"
if yes { "I sure can, Mom!"
"Great. I'll route this to you. Tell me if you can't do it and I'll take over."}
if no {"No, Mom. That's a dead language."
"That's OK, honey, I can deal with it. I'll let you know if I have a bunch of little math problems for you to solve."
"Thanks Mom. Tell me if you need to speak DVI-D because I can do that!"}
