Is this the prbolem 'everyone' complained about since the cards have been out?
Because this is happening to me, I thought it was due to overheating but it seems the temps range from 65-76 low-high. To me this seems normal, I'll be checking my PSU but I am fairly sure its a 875w(back from 2011) Not sure if I should upgrade it.
As of right now I have dual montiors plugged into my R9 290x MSI Twin frozr. (in a week I'll be back down to one monitor)

CPU 2600k
RAM 16gb 1600

BIOS update for the mobo? Mine hasn't gotten an update in years.

Your problem likely is related to your VRAM and VRMs. The card gets hot and I suspect that the cooling isn't perfectly uniform = while the sensor might say things are fine, one or more parts might be getting a little too hot = Black Screen Crash!

I had a Club3D R9 290 and at stock speeds it would have a black screen lock up every ~30 minutes of gaming. Underclocking it reduced the amount of black screen crashes.

I then sold the card, and bought a Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 thinking that everything will be fine.......nope! The card would crash at stock speeds every 30 minutes or so.....

The problem wasn't the powersupply. I used Afterburner to set constant voltages and all that other stuff/advice/suggestions. Nothing really solved the issue except extreme underclocking of the card.

Anyway, I finally said 'F*** This!' and bought a new GTX 980. I haven't had a single crash since then (although I did have to disable Nvidia Streaming Service prior to even playing games).

I used to be an AMD fanboy, but I guess those days are done. My advice is either underclock the card in increments until you find a stable speed, or better yet, go Nvidia.

*Oh, and the only change in my now super stable system was removing the R9 290 and replacing it with the GTX 980. There were no other changes!
