R9 290x or a GTX 770?

Solution
290X:
+performs better than a 770, natch. it's direct competition are the 780/780ti/Titan
+costs less than the 780/780ti/Titan
-runs ridiculously hot.
-performance issues.
-costs more than a 770 now that it's price is cut down to around $330.

GTX 770:
+cheaper
+more free games (2? 3? can't recall)
-trades blows with a 280x which costs $20-30 cheaper, which sometimes performs as close as a 780 itself.

According to the reviews, 290x is a mixed bag, depending on subjective definition of "performance". 290X is definitely billed higher-end than 770, since it beat even Titan in initial reviews. However, it turned out that 290X in current launching configuration has serious inconsistency issue with very very loud noise and thermal throttling. Until boardpartners will launch with customized cooler, you have to evaluate such pros and cons yourself. When it happens, I think definitely 290X will beat 770 in every aspect for sure, in terms of performance.
