I'm making a new build with up to date parts and I'm stuck between choosing either the R9 290x or the GTX 970 GPU chipsets. I know the controversy behind the 970, so my question is, is the 970 still worth buying even though it's not a true 4GB VRAM card or should I buy a 290X card now that they have dropped price.

Solution
I have had an argument in another thread of me showing the facts that the gtx 970 performs slightly better than the r9 290x in most games even though it really only comes with 3.5Gb of vram. just as long as you are doing single monitor 1080p or 1440p the gtx 970 is the better choice also if you look at the controversy of nvidia scamming people out of 0.5Gb of vram also look at how amd was scamming people by overcharging people for the r9 290x.... before the gtx 970/980 came out they were charging 500-600$ for that card but once the gtx 970 came out they did a drastic reduction in price to match the gtx 970s price and still they cost the same now the gtx 970 still out performs the r9 290x slightly in most to all games
GTX. Similar speeds with the 970 faster in most benchmarks, and the nVidia cards are more flexible, with Gsync built in if you want to upgrade your monitor in the future, and nVidia is historically better and more reliable with driver support.
