It may seem like a closed case, but here's the impasse; I have approximately fourteen hundred USD ***Having something left over won't be a bad thing*** to spend on a new system with the exception an HDD and possibly RAM, I plan to buy the GPU next month and the CPU the month after, I've decided on either a $280 290X or a $360 970. Would it be worth it to save eighty bucks on the 290X or just go for the 970? Is the performance difference and GameWorks worth it? IYO... We could also make this a discussion.

heres comparisons

in my opinion and most other people the 970 is the better choice.
it consumes less power, has better drivers and performs better overall with less stuttering.
ive owned a r9 290 and a gtx 970. would never recommend a 290 series again. the drivers were awful and the 970 was so much smoother.

on a side note its not a good idea at all to order parts one at a time. you are just wasting away your warranties and your return windows. how do you know if one is dead on arrival or defective if you have no system to test it in? it may work off the bat, but how are you going to know if itll work the next day or for the rest of your return window? why take the chance and not be able to return an expensive defective part? do you really want to deal with rma processes instead of replacing it for a new one? i could ask 10 more questions but you probably get the picture.

Thanks for the detailed response and links. I've decided that I'll just budget a 980. Also, I have another PC to swap parts to test with the new so that shouldn't be a problem.-? I am pretty excited though, It'll be a huge improvement either way.

Personally think the 980 is vastly overpriced compared to the 970.

Id be buying a sli compatible board & a 970 & in a year or two's time adding another 970 (it will be far cheaper then) if performance starts to become less than you want.
