R9 290x or R9 290 for 1080p gaming?

I am looking at getting one of these two cards and want to base my decision off of both price and performance, but putting performance as a general priority. I know the 290x is definitely a lot more meat than the 290, but I can't now and likely won't any time soon be able to afford a 1440p or 4k monitor. My understanding based on the article I've posted below is that at 1080p the two cards are virtually the same, the 290x really showing it's advantages at higher resolutions. Is this likely to be the case often? I don't really want to pay an extra $180 just for 5-10 fps at most since I intend to stay at 1080p for a while. However, if the margin were bigger, maybe 15-20 fps going from 290 to 290x I would consider the investment worth it. Has anyone seen or performed any benchmarking that could help me decide which card to get? My hope is to get fps somewhere in the 80-120 range because my new monitor has a 144hz refresh rate I would love to make use of. Thanks for the help!! I would also love links if anyone has found some in depth benchmark comparisons between the two cards that goes deeper than this article does.

Solution
Are you planning to buy a 4k monitor when price comes down? Even a couple of years time?

If thats the case then get the R9 290x in my view, too much power is better then not enough and you can always crossfire later on.
If its just 1080 then itzdanielp has your answer.

Solution
who would go for the 290x over a 290 for a 2-5fps difference for a $150 increase?! insane. Check out pcgamers article for more benches aswell. http://www.pcgamer.com/review/amd-radeon-r9-290-review/

Sorry I quick read and I thought he was comparing it to a GTX 780. Damn I can be silly at times. My vote is also on the R9 290
