Hello!
So I have this rig and now I figure I need a GPU upgrade.
CPU: FX-8350 @4.0 GHz
RAM: 1x8GB Corsair Vengeance@1600 MHz
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 660 Direct CU II OC 2GB GDDR5
PSU: 650 W
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
Chassy: Antec X1
I have a 1080p monitor. So I need to buy a new GPU. But my real concern is if an NVIDIA card would be better or an AMD. I was thinking of Sapphire R9 290X 4GB. Is a 650W PSU enough for that? And would my CPU bottleneck a GTX 970 (this ones on my mind too)?
I had a HD7790 in this rig before GTX 660. Everything used to run smooth, yeah at low fps but smooth. When I switched to NVIDIA I noticed that the fps went up but it was sluttery and not smooth. I reckon it was the CPU. I happen to think AMD CPUs are good with AMD GPUs. Is it that way? If so, should I grab an R9 290X or just wait until the new AMD cards launch?

Solution
I would get an NVIDIA GPU. For around the same price for better performance, you can get the GTX 970. I would get either a 970 or a different NVIDIA GPU of your choice. It's not always the case that AMD CPU's are better with AMD CPU's. Intel is better for gaming, depends on the CPU you get.

Don't worry, the FX-8350 shouldn't bottleneck it much at all. IF you want better performance, you can OC you FX or just get an Intel. But for now, it should be fine :)
