Hi guys,

This is the place I come when I've pulled all my hair out. I should come here earlier as It is always the fastest way to solve my P.C issues...

My latest dilemma is whit a new rig I'm building.
Basically I am not getting the performance I think I should be getting. ARMA 3 Is only hitting 40FPS even though my mates are easily getting 60 with less powerful rigs and Elite Dangerous is 20FPS but this is In 4K.
Even my desktop seems to be a bit sluggish in 4K.
Do I need to enable CrossFire whit this GPU or is there a trick I'm missing.

Thanks people!! You're the best,
Baggsy

R9 295 x2
Croshair v Formula-z
16bg Ram (Had to remove 16gb because of BSOD but thats another problem)
FX 8350 O.c'd to 4.7Ghz
Corsair AX1200i

Solution

Go to Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options and select High Performance. Also, make sure you have Crossfire enabled in the Catalyst Control Center.

That is normal with Arma 3. It is CPU limited, which is why you get no change.

Arma 3 is very poorly optimized and it runs like crap. I play it all of the time, and I usually average around 60 FPS in most servers, but I can get dips below 20 FPS. FPS is will depend on hardware, but also on the server you are using.

No matter what hardware you have, the game only uses two CPU cores, max. AMD has worse single core performance, and you need all you can get with Arma, which is why it's best to have an Intel i5 or better.

Try unparking your cores, and close all other programs while playing the game. Anything taking up CPU resources can hurt your performance.

Yeah You absolutely right but My mates have the same CPUs on the same servers and I was getting better fps with my old rig... Same CPU.
Also I'm a bit worried because windows desktop is so slow in 4k.

Thanks for the reply

What was your old GPU? And were you using 4K with it, too?

Check that you have High Performance mode enabled, just to be sure.

Old GPU was HD7950 but this wasn't on 4k. Arma 3 isn't either and I have tried it with different monitors.
What is High Performance mode?
OH, Also If I set all my graphics to low on Arma3 then I still get the same FPS.

Sapphire Trixx seems to be thinking that I have only got one R9 290 also.

Check with GPU-Z to see if it is enabled. AMD may have dropped the feature.

yeah Xfire is enabled. I was hoping it wasn't... Never mind!
Well I hope the core parking is going to help or I guess I'll have to accept that 20 FPS is as good as its going to get in Elite Dangerous.

Thanks for the help guys.

I kinda feel sorry for you - $1000 on a card like that and all you get is 20FPS. Hope you get good frames in ED soon.

Actually, one thing you could still try is that reseat your RAM sticks. Are they running in dual channel? That could cut down performance severely.
If you have 4 memory slots, then the RAMs should be in alternate slots(generally denoted by same colour). Keeping them in adjacent or far-out slots is doable, but not recommended.

Yeah I have the RAM in the right place thanks.
I had to remove 2 stick because I was getting a BSOD.

Is this a good 3D mark score for this system?

SCORE
P11837 with AMD Radeon R9 295X2(2x) and AMD FX-8350
Graphics Score 15152
Physics Score 7795
Combined Score 6356

The graphics score should be around 20K.

When did you buy the card?

I recommend returning it if you can. Not only because it is giving you problems, but because $1000 is too much when you can get great performance from SLI 970's for much less.

Well it sits at about 30C at idle and Furmark got up to 51C.
I just looked on sapphire trixx and it is saying all clock speeds and board power are at 0. This isn't what GPU-Z says though.

Yeah you're right Rob but even my windows desktop is stuttering!
I'm going to try 3dmark without my cpu overclock, maybe flash the bios and if that fails i'm driving across country to return the GPU today

So If anyone is still reading this thread I have fairy tale ending.
I drove for over 2 hours to take the R9 back to the shop and the test guy said it died spectacularly as he was installing the drivers! Good news for me.
I ended up buying 2 GTX 980s and in SLI they are hitting over 32000 in a graphics 3Dmark. Happy ending.
4K gaming is now the beautiful experience I thought it was going to be.

Thanks for your help guys, I'd probably have just made do with a faulty GPU if it wasn't for you.
