Right now the r9 295x2 is really cheap as low as 680 for a vision tek version. So is it worth it to spend a little more for a r9295x2 or to get a r9 290x and put them in crossfire?

Solution
The 290'x costs ~40$ less than the gtx970. therefore,you save a total of 40+40+60(for the bridge)=140$ by purchasing the 290x's. So,that's a great deal.
The R9 295X2 is a dual gpu which consists of two 290x's. So,they are nearly the same but AMD did made some tweaks in the 295X2 which is the fastest dual gpu till date. The R9 295X2 have somewhat better cooling and boosts as compared to two 290x's in xfire.

which ever is cheaper? personally i'm not a fan of using AIO cooler as a standard cooler for GPU. i don't mid using such cooler on GPU but i just don't like it being forced on me. also you're going to need very good quality PSU for 295x2 because AMD only supply the card with 2 8 pin while the card easily exceed 400w even on average gaming session. so it was going to push that 8 pin well above it's rated spec.

A bridge does NOT cost $60! At my local PC store(small business), I got one for $8. Also, if your board supports xfire or SLi, it typically comes with a bridge. With that being said, the r9 290x's are $40-60 cheaper than the GTX 970's. They also have 4GB of RAM. ;-) Downside is, they take up significantly more power, although if you SLi/XFire I wouldn't recommend anything less than an 850w PSU anyway.

awesome, and im guessing as the two gpus on the x2 are within the same x8 channel there will be less of a scaling issue across the three cards. I have the opportunity you see to do a trade with a friend for a msi r9 295x2 and i already have a r9 290x msi card, so they should just plug and play right?

I had the same idea. Poured the cash and bought an XFX 295X2 and Gigabyte 290x OC. Lots of inconsistencies in fps in 4k when i had both cards running. Most games run in ultra mode without Antialiasing.

BF Hardline runs in 4k 2160p in ultra between 40-130fps in game depending on sections.

Here are my crossfire stats for the 2 cards - http://www.3dmark.com/fs/4607028

Stats from 3dmark looks ok but still no match for 3 nvidia 980 in sli. Maybe amd driver issues or cpu bottleneck or maybe my PSU (Coolmaster v1000) does not have enough juice. Considering adding waterblocks but just cant be bothered with the process.

GTA V is great in certain sections but crashes in others.

I'm going to swap out the Gigabyte card for a reference 290x from AMD next weekend to see if its the Gigabyte 290x causing the poor performance.

All i want is smooth game play (eg. 4k 2160p in ultra with some settings turned off ).

So far my experience with such a setup has been less than satisfactory.

Considering ditching both the gigabyte and amd reference 290x cards and pair it with another xfx 295x2.

Thats a crock of crap. A decent 1200w ps is more than enough for an r9 295x2 + an r9 290x in trifire. If your power supply isn't cutting it, then replace it with any decent gold rated 1200w and you shouldn't have any issues. I have extra fans and a liquid cooled fx 8350 at 4.8ghz and im still running under 1000w at full load with that setup. My r9 290x is liquid cooled also btw so it works just fine. Don't get me started on compatibility issues though. Thats a different story altogether.
