Would you go for R9 380 2gb OC for £115 or Sapphire R9 290x 4gb for £200.

I think the 380 would suit my needs but since its only 2gb and not 4gb would cause problems. I don't game much but have a big back log and will be spending more time gaming to catch up. I will play on 1080p no higher don't think I'd be overly fussed on ultra settings.

Plan on playing fallout 3 4, civ games, starcraft2, total war, bioshock series, batman series, dark souls 1 2 3 when its out are my favourite games so it must be able to play 3 when its out. 200 is pushing the budget a lot planned on 100 but if the 290x saves more long run I'd go for it. Do I take 380 now to catch up on back log and then upgrade it in 2 years or would 290x last up to 5 years?

Its a good price for the 380. a 4gb version would provide higher min framerates. and slightly higher overal avg framerates. I'd get the 380 and upgrade next year when nvidia bring out pascal or whatever amd are going to bring out

Is there any games at the minute or up to last year that do require more than 2gb of vram at 1080p? is 4gb necessary? I'm thinking of just using the r9 380 to complete my backlog and play dark souls 3 when it comes out in march and then once that is done upgrade if need be to the likes of a 970 if its down in price to about £150?

The R9 290X would be a great choice too, its a tiny bit better than the 970 in some benchmarks.

No. the biggest difference ive seen is assassins creed syndicate. it was a 960 2gb vs a 960 4gb. the 4gb had about 3fps higher average frame rate but the minimum frame rates were about 20 on the 4gb and 5 on the 2gb. So just a bit more obvious stuttering now and then. all other games the difference is alot smaller and wouldnt be noticeable. Syndicate is just a poorly optimised piece of poop as ever from Ubisoft. I watched a vid for benchmarks on battlefront(i think) and the 380 and 290x performed about the same. both above 80fps
