R9 390 and i7 6700k performance

I have an i7 6700k and an r9 390 couple with 16gb 3000mhz ram in dual channel mode. My question is that when I play some games especially MGS5 TPP at max settings I'm only getting 40-45 fps whereas with the system I have I'd expect more performance wise. Any help would be appreciated. I also have a z170 motherboard a fatality k6.

I have to say that the r9 390 is what is holding you back. Your system is pretty much up to date, but that GPU is older than what is expected. I would try a GTX 1070, or may even a 1060.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was thinking. I bought the gpu at the beginning of the year so probably will sell it and get another as it wasn't as good as I thought. What in your opinion is he best gpu at the moment? The 1070?

The best GPU at the moment is the GTX Titan X (Pascal). However, it has a $1200 price tag, so that is probably out of the question. For consumers, the GTX 1080 is your best bet. I hear the 1080 Ti may come out, but the 1080 should last you for years to come.

Turned out the power mode was set to power saver so it was throttling my cpu. Everything is at max settings at a steady 60fps. Thank for the help anyway.
