R9 390 ----> GTX 1060 3GB worth it?

Hello guys!
Right now I have an ASUS R9 390 (with 3 fans) and that legendary 8GBs of VRAM. From what I know about gaming and graphics cards, the thing that mostly eats the VRAM is the resolution. So since I "only" have a 1920*1080 monitor, I don't play on higher resolutions that FHD and most games use like 2-3GBs of VRAM. So the GTX 1060 has enough VRAM for those, but it also has a powerful GPU, not to mention the NVidia gameworks.
So the question is, while using less than 4GB of VRAM and playing only at FHD, would it be any better to switch from the R9 390 8GB to the GTX 1060 3GB?

Solution
I definitely would not switch from an R9 390 to a 3GB GTX1060. You are not going to gain much if anything. Perhaps you will even lose performance in some areas. I don't consider this to be a good investment or even an upgrade.

I saw somewhere a benchmark which showed that even if a game uses more than 3GB (like 4-5), the 3GB 1060 only loses like 10% performance to the 6GB version.
here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYNigmB6sWY
For example: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor at 1440p uses 5.4GB of VRAM, the 1060 6GB has an average of 61FPS, the 3GB has 56FPS. It uses almost twice us much VRAM than the 1060 3GB has, yet goes just a little bit under the 6GB version.

I saw somewhere a video which showed game freezing with only 3gb, but fps is almost the same.

That might be true, however the R9 390's 1050MHz GPU isn't enough either. This card is like VRAM FOR THE WIN, but actually sucks a lot if I don't use all the VRAM. And let's be honest, as long as I stay on 1080p I don't think I'm ever going to use more than 5GB.
