R9 390 (non X) vs GTX 970

I'm building a new gaming PC and I'm sort of on a budget, and blah, blah. Here's the gist, I want to know which card is better:

They are close, so you'll be fine with either.

The 390 runs hotter and uses more power. But it does seem to be marginally cheaper and has double the ram, which you likely won't need.

Tom's is happy to recommend both.

With your setup and monitor I'd go the 970 unless planning for higher end monitors (higher resolution is where the 2390 shines with it's additional VRAM
