I'm getting a 4K TV very soon and I obviously won't always game on it with my R9 390, but I do wish to check out the performance.

I heard somewhere that AMD cards don't support HDMI 2.0 which is needed for 3840x2160 res. So if they don't what are my options cuz my TV doesn't have Displayport.

And let's say I sorted out that issue, now can 390 provide 3840x2160 at all? I obviously don't expect 60FPS on any of the AAA titles but would it be able to push at least 25-30 in High-medium?

Note: I've the Sapphire Radeon R9 390 8G

Solution
Without Displayport on the TV or HDMI 2.0 on that older card you could do 30FPS at 4K. I'd cap it at 30FPS. You should be able to get 4K at 30FPS. Definitely not 60 though as both the card and the HDMI 1.4 would limit you. You'd need a large graphics card upgrade to something such as a GTX 1080 for ideal 4K performance. Even modern midrange cards still struggle with 4K 60FPS as it's very demanding.

So far the ONLY option on the market that does 4k 60Hz DP -> HDMI 2.0 conversion.

Confirmed with R9 390 that 3840x2160 60Hz 4:4:4 works.

5.1 Audio pass through works.

TV hardware monitor metadata pass through works.

The only thing I think is not passing through is the hot-plug status, which actually works in my favor. (No more Win10 bug resizing windows with my TV off).

I'm using a Samsung UHD40JU6500. For this particular TV, there are two tricks to make it work:
1. Label the input source as PC to get 4:4:4.
2. Turn on UHD Color option for HDMI1, connect to HDMI1, to get 60Hz correctly.
