Hi guys ,
I am planning on buliding a new gaming rig ,my specs are
intel core i5 6600k
corsair lpx 2*4gb ddr4 2400MHz ram
asus z170 pro gaming motherboard
cooler master 212 evo
cooler master thunder 600w.
I am really confused on which graphic card to go for.R9 390 or the Gtx 970.
I'm worried about the VRAM issue, I'll be gaming mostly at 1080p but is it going to be a problem in the future?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Solution
Both are great GPU. With the current drivers, the R9 390 is faster in average.

I think the GTX 970 is sitll faster at 1080p (not by much), but if you ever want to go qHD or 4K, the R9 390 will be a better choice.

Either way, i will recommend a better PSU.

I agree on the case where NVIDIA cards are cooler and more power efficient than AMD cards. But in this case you've got a much bigger and better GPU as your secondary choice which is the R9 390X, and personally I would suggest buying one from MSI because their cooling tech (Twin Frozr) is one of the best.
Also it comes with 8 gigs of VRAM and 512-bit bandwidth which is pretty much everything you need to do these days, from gaming to video rendering etc. and you can use this particular GPU without and upgrade surely for the next 3 years or so.

So if you can afford it purchase the MSI Radeon R9 390X GAMING 8G 8GB 512-Bit GDDR5 which is available on Newegg for $420.

As for the PSU the XFX TS 650W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply is much better and has a 80+ GOLD Rating and is about the same price as the Cooler Master.

Hope this helps. Good Luck! :)

sorry for replying so late, but i will be playing at 1440p , R9 390 will be a better choice.

In that case yes the 390 will be better, but keep in mind with these 2 cards your only looking at a 8-10% boost over each other. They are pretty equally matched anyway so go for what you really feel like getting, both are strong and will be for a while and both work great in dual SLI/CF layouts so it`s your choice at the end.

The answer is yes. If you already have a 1440p (qHD) then the 390 is a better choice.

I don't know which brand are you gonna get, but at this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9cKZiJw6Pk, he had the luck that his R9 390 managed to OC to 1200MHz (which is a lot) and it does a great job against an OCed GTX 970 SSC and a R9 290X.
