R9 390, what's wrong?

I recently bought an R9 390 (Gigabyte Windforce) and decided to check out if it is performing correctly and as ever with my luck, the userbenchmark shows the card severely underperforming (1% percentile) and it hit 95C immediately... any thoughts on the issue?

Should I be trying to get a replacement or try applying thermal paste?

As far as I am aware, the drivers are up to date.

CPU: i5 4590 (Corsair H60 cooler)
Motherboard: H81-plus
Power Supply: Corsair VS650
RAM: 8GB DDR3 Crucial something...

it's a hot card for one, it requires adequate case cooling. is your PC set up with intake and exhaust fans?

if you can get your money back on it and get a newer gpu that runs cooler. if you can wait a bit the newer nvidia gpu are dropping in the next 90 days.

Cooling is more than adequate in the case, and unfortunately budget is very tight now... any chance a card that performs better will be under £100? This card was bought second hand but with a very generous 2 year warranty for component failure

And another thing, temperatures hit 90C from 900 MHz, is that normal?

I've answered my own question but thank you for the responses. Thermal paste was dry as a rock, so a replacement of that has driven temperatures under load to <70C
