I am upgrading from R9 290 from HIS since I just couldn't handle the awful cooler. My goal is 144hz on 1080p. Should I get an R9 390X from MSI or get an R9 Nano? I will probably upgrade when 4K 144hz is a thing and it has to be AMD due to them being my preference and bad experience with Nvidia cards.

Well, we know the Nano will start shipping within the next 5 weeks. What we do not know is how much stock there will be, and what the price it. I believe that the performance will be something near 80% to 85% of the Fury X, but I readily admit that is a guestimate.

I sit here thinking about which one, and I think I would want to wait for the Nano. But that wait could be multiple months. I was looking around at availability of the Fury X last night. You can find them now. But most brands were out of stock. Nano will most likely be the same way for awhile.

Yeah. I've been following the 300 and Fury series since they were just rumors. I'm just curious on other people's opinions for 1080p 144hz. I figure that I can wait a few more weeks and get a lower temp, lower power consumption, HBM, and full DirectX 12 support, or I can get a card now and double the Vram, more power consumed, and higher temps. But I have heard of R9 Fury performing worse than the 390X at 1080p. I'll probably want more antialiasing if I stay at 1080p, so I'll go with the 390X since it has more Vram.

I'm also looking at something that can drive my 1080 @ 144hz, and it seems to be a fairly tall order for current games.
I'm going away shortly and will be back in 5-6 weeks, then I'll start looking seriously. By then the Nano should be out, and the Fury's should have saturated the market enough to start seeing some price drops, but I'll be looking at a 980Ti.
Maybe wait for stock levels and prices to stabilise for a bit?

I'll probably just wait for Nano to come out since it will cause 980 and 390X to drop in price since it is confirmed to come out next month. It's hard to tell if it will be more powerful than R9 Fury since it is 890mhz and full Fiji XT. If it is more powerful, it will be $600, if it isn't, it'll be $500. Should be interesting to see in a few weeks with DirectX 12 coming out. I'll be disappointed if it is $600, though. Since it likely won't affect any pricing on other cards.

Anything less than 4k resolution, you probably should go with a 980Ti.

At 4K resolution, it is almost a toss up. If I were in the position where I had a 4K monitor, and wanted a new video card, I would probably go with the Fury X.

But I am not in that position. I still have my lowly 770, and will live with it for another year. I think next year will be my year to upgrade.
