Hi guys! Canadian here, quoting everything in CAD not USD. Prefer newegg.ca or amazon.ca.

I am thinking about upgrading my computer, possibly in the near future. Current specs are:

Radeon 5870 Graphics card
HP ZR24w 24" 1920x1200 IPS Monitor
i7 960
Asus P6T Motherboard
Corsair HX 750W PSU
4 x 2GB OCZ 1333MHz 7-7-7 RAM
1TB Seagate HDD

I mainly play 4x strategy games (Civ5 etc.), RPGs (Skyrim) and MOBAs (LoL), no FPS.

My interest is mostly in upgrading my screen to a 1440p 27". I would like to stick with an IPS monitor when I do this. I understand that my current GPU will really not be able to cope with 1440p for the current or next generation of games, so I will need to upgrade that at the same time as my monitor.

I was looking at the two recently released 144Hz monitors, ASUS MG279Q with Freesync, and Acer XB270HU with G-Sync. According to the reviews on this website they are pretty much the same monitor except for the Freesync vs. G-Sync with maybe a slight edge going to the ASUS.

The price difference between them is about $240 CAD on Newegg.ca currently however. This means that if I want to spend the same amount on an upgrade, I have $240 less to spend on a GPU if I go with the G-Sync monitor.

This makes the choice basically between an R9 Fury (NOT X) (750$) + ASUS (710$) = $1460, or GTX 970 (480$) + Acer (950$) = $1430.

My understanding is that the GTX970 would give significantly worse performance at 1440p then the Fury, possibly making the expensive 144Hz monitor useless as I would never run anything above 60Hz. However, I have also read that Freesync is immature technology and may be fairly useless compared to G-Sync in many situations anyway.

So, do any of you have thoughts on which of these would be best? Is 144Hz + Free/G-Sync even worthwhile if I am not playing FPS games where people mainly benefit from the high refresh rates?

Would I be better off going down a cheaper upgrade route of a 60Hz IPS 1440p 27" monitor such as the BenQ GW2765HT (430$) + GTX 780 / R9 Fury (750$) = $1180? Or even BenQ + GTX 770 = $910 if that is enough to drive ~50-60Hz at 1440p?

Thanks!

R9 Fury + ASUS MG279Q would be the better option. While I do believe that gsync is the superior frame pacing monitor technology, the fury is significantly better than 970. The fury would beat 970 in every benchmark and the monitors are close enough where the cards will be the determining factor. The gtx 980 would be better than both assuming you have no issues overclocking the card. So if you can get gtx 980 with gsync monitor, I would go with that.

fury + freesync would be better than 970 + g-sync. also GCN architecture will perform better than maxwell in dx12 games.
