Hi, I have been looking at cards and comparing them to eachother for a while, because I've been deciding what Graphics card I should get for my pc.
I am currently running an Intel I7 Core CPU with 2GB RAM.

I was just looking at specs of my friends graphics card, and comparing it to the card I was looking at getting, and seeing how close to his performance I will be getting.

My friend Owns a GTX 285, and I am looking at getting a Radeon HD 5770

I have added a link to each of the cards above for you to check out the specs.

Also, here is a link to a comparison website with the two cards next to eachother:
http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=615&card2=605

The biggest difference between these cards, is that the 285 is allot more expencive than the 5770.
I was going to assume his card is better than mine, but I have learned that price isnt everything...

So which card has better performance? and by how much?

A GTX285 is about two tiers above a 5770..but a GTX285 also cost 2x as much as a 5770.

A 5770 is about equal to a 4870, which in turn is about equal to a GTX260..

4870/5770/GTX260 < 4890/GTX275 < GTX280/GTX285 < 5850

For the price of $300, a person can buy a 5850, which is actually cheaper than a GTX285 and performs 15% better. A 5850 also supports dx11, eyefinity, runs cooler, and uses less energy than a GTX285.

As for your 5770 card, I'd reckon a GTX285 is about 30-40% better. Of course for the price of a GTX285, you can buy 2x 5770s in crossfire, which would be about 40% better than a single GTX285.

If it's an LGA1366 i7 then it is triple channel so you would want either 3 or 6 gigs of ram. LGA1156 is dual channel so 4 gigs is a good choice.

Yeah 285 is much more faster than 5770,maybe more than 30-40%.But you shouldn't forget the price. If money isn't important for you, just go for 5850 or 5870.5850 is faster than 285(in almost every benchmark and game),It's cheaper,it supports DX11 and consumes less energy. You can easily overclock a 5850 from 725 to 850-900 which in that case it will even surpass 5870,and you know what? It'll definitely win 285,maybe more than 20% faster...

Some say 285 has physics, but believe me physics is nothing special,I had a 400 bucks(when I bought it) Geforce 8800 GTX,and it was hell of graphic card, and now I have a 5850,and I tell you, there's nnothing special about physics. For instance in mass effect, besides flying boxes I saw nothing else about Physics!!!!!Can you believe it?

So I'd recommend going for 5850,because it's faster,it consumes less energy,it's cheaper,it supports DX11 and etc...

If pricing is not a problem, I'd go for a 5850. However, if price is an issue, I would hold off a bit till the 5830 arrive. That'll give you some room to get more RAM to your system.

You want to balance your rig as much as possible. The best graphics card in the world won't perform at it's peak if the rest of your system can't keep up.

Believe it or not the Radeon 5770 actually Benchmarks better than the GTX 285 for me. I had a 9800 GX2 that died on me and I RMA'd it. While I was waiting for a replacement card I bought a Radeon 5770. In 3D Mark the 5770 gets a score of 11154. When BFG sent me my replacement card they sent me a GTX 285 because they had no more 9800 GX2's. Now on my same computer with all the other same hardware the GTX 285 gets a 3D Mark benchmark score of 9889.

The Windows Experience score similarly went down with the GTX 285 with a 7.2 for the Radeon 5770 and a 6.9 for the GTX 285

It may have something to do with me running Windows 7 and DX 11 being factored into the tests and score but either way the GTX 285 isnt testing as well.

my new 5770 is great. this card is awesome, i'm playing age of conan maxed out at 1680x1050 and it averages 50-60fps and never ever drops below 30fps.

the 285 gtx is a good card, fast as hell but i dont see any reason to get it unless you are playing at 2560x1600 resolution because the 5770 is great at everything below that and is so much cheaper.

Whether you need a clean install switching back to a Nvidia card , or there is something else amiss, those scores are not correct for 3dmark Vantage.

From the stats site , they have what would be approximate scores.

edit: At this point ,keep the card thats performing good for you right now. Not telling you to keep a
card that should be fast thats not, :) .

wow I'd be doing some research into your hardware and compatability issues with the 285 card, cos thats not right :S
The gtx 285 should be around twice as good almost, so if it is benchmarking lower than the 5770, your 285 must not like your specific hardware, or they might have sent you a dodgey card.

I'd suggest firstly doing some reasearch, then if there is no sign of your 285 not liking your hardware, you should contact the people who sent you the 285, and tell them that it is performing at about 60% less than what it should...

actually a 5770 might not have enough power for the coming year at 1920x1080 to play on high settings, but don't get the GTX285 the 5850 should be close in price though depends on where you live
