If you have a crossfire motherboard, do it. If you don't, then just buy a single powerful card. Two 5770's are extremly good in crossfire.....
We're going to need to upgrade the whole system, it's currently got an athlon II dual core and 4gb ram on a stock mobo. The crossfire is going to be something we're paying attention to.
How big of a power supply should I get with a phenom II quad and 8-12gb ram?
It depends on the power supply you buy. I would be safe and buy a 650 watt power supply with a 12v rail with At least 15amps.
Also, waht is your mobo? Can you post the complete rig?

The rig is to be replaced with whatever necessary, at this point it's stock POS.
"5770's are not really on par with 6950 even the 1GB"
2 5770's will be worse than one 1gb 6950? How much worse?
Minimum frame rates will be lower in almost all games. I can't say for sure.
At it's best the 5770's will match a 5870 or a 6950. at it's worst it's a 5770 where as a 6950 won't
Yeah, at worse two XFired Radeon HD 5770 will act as a single HD 5770.
That will be the case if you play a game that does not support XFire. I generally recommend people to buy a single powerful video card if they can afford to do so.
